Introduction

Champions are created by nurturing talent through rigorous training, apt coaching and right guidance. With this belief, The Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Jharkhand was established to facilitate promotion and development of Sports & Games in the State of Jharkhand. The objectives include the creation of infrastructure conducive to overall development of sports at all levels across the State. Also conducting competition and motivating local participation to improve sports ecosystem in the State.

Jharkhand is a rising star in the field of Sports. Several of its players are now playing for the country, especially in the games of Hockey and Archery. Jharkhand has continuously excelled at national and international levels brining several accolades to the state and the country. Jharkhand’s only Olympic medalist, Jaipal Singh captained the Indian national hockey team to clinch the gold medal at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the captain of Indian cricket team from 2007 to 2016 and the best wicket keeper batsman for India till date. He has also led the Indian Cricket Team to ICC Cricket World Cup Glory on 2 April 2011. The state is home to famous athletes such as Michael Kindo, Helen Soy, Sabitri Purti, Charles Brownes, Varun Aaron, Saurabh Tiwari, Ashunta Lakra, Vimal Lakra to name of few. One of the emerging sport personality is Deepika Kumari, a young athlete who competes in the event of Archery and won gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth games in the women's individual recurve event. The department is committed towards development of the youth through sports and to channelize their energy in overall socio-economic development and growth of Jharkhand.
